It's important to remember that the UK Punk 'music revolution' of the mid-late 70s had an enourmous influence on Prog Rock, and music in general. As a consequence, Genesis adapted to the change with shorter pieces that were more 'radio friendly'. I think it's pretty certain they would have gone under without this change. Although I'm sure the individual members would have continued to survive involving themselves with different projects.

This song just dosesn't have the great lyrical and musical depth of Illegal Alien does it?
Wow. What the fuck happened? The resounding answer would probably be: Phil and Disco.
I hesitate to talk smack because they performed some amazing music in the Gabriel period but after W&W I think you can safely ignore them.
And to think Phil played on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass! Collins is like the musical equivalent of Anakin Skywalker...

It's weird how after Mike Rutherford picks up the bass they don't even show him once.

When you really care for a band, love their music and yoyu see trascendental musical pieces replaced by Illegal Alien, as a fan I'm entitled to give my opinion, even if you don't like it
Tha bend was talented, from a strictly musical perspective (technical point of view), what Collins did is the usual Chorus-verse-chorus stuff ideal for selling music to kids.
BTW: Progressive Rock has no relation with evolution of the music, it's a genre with a name, nothing more, Musical box is real Prog.

Phil Collins, how ever good a drummer, turned genisis into a joke pop record band. When Gabriel was on vocals, the band had a unique direction, now genisis is a joke to us serious musicians. i have had this conversation with serious musicians, from The Smiths, Stone Roses etc, we know !
